Sir Venki Ramakrishnan confirmed as President-elect of the Royal Society

When the news of Nobel Laureate Sir Venki (Venkatraman) Ramakrishnan being confirmed as President-elect of the Royal Society to assume office beginning December 1, 2015 was announced by the Royal Society (@royalsociety), I couldn't resist tweeting (and re-tweeting) it out. But my mind also raced back to the time when I first heard of the announcement of Sir Venki's Nobel Prize, back in 2009.

At the time, it had also been announced that his PhD adviser was Professor Emeritus Tomoyasu Tanaka of Ohio University. I noted immediately that this made him my 'PhD uncle' since my own PhD adviser, Professor Kishin Moorjani, was also advised by Professor Tanaka, who was then at The Catholic University of America. I have ever since been seeking a suitable opportunity to blog all about my 'PhD relationship' with Sir Venki.

Well, now Sir Venki, in joining the ranks of a galaxy of super-achieving Presidents of the Royal Society [such as Sir Isaac Newton (1703-27), Lord Kelvin (1890-95), PMS Blackett (1965-70) and the Astronomer Royal, Lord (Martin) Rees of Ludlow (2005-2010)] has given me just such a chance!

Congratulations and kudos, Sir Venki! I feel both humbled and exhilarated to be your 'PhD nephew'!!
